Cooling season is close at hand in San Antonio, and that means your air conditioner will soon be humming 24/7 to keep you comfortable in the South Texas heat. Preventing common air conditioner problems is essential for avoiding the cost and inconvenience of an A/C breakdown this summer. Your annual air conditioner inspection and tune-up, along with a little DIY maintenance, will go a long way toward preventing these common problems.
Problem: Low Refrigerant
If your air conditioner has a refrigerant leak or wasn’t properly charged at installation, the A/C may blow warm air or the condenser coil may ice up. A technician will measure the refrigerant level to ensure it meets system specifications. If there’s a leak, it will be repaired and the system topped off with the right amount of refrigerant.
Problem: Clogged Drain
During periods of high humidity, the evaporator coil produces a considerable amount of condensation, which drips into the condensate pan and drains through the attached hose. If the drain becomes clogged, the pan will overflow and shut down the system. During atune-up, a condensate pan will be cleaned and the drain flushed to help prevent this common air conditioner problem. After a tune-up, you can help prevent clogs by keeping the area around the system clean.
Problem: Electric Control Failure
The fan and compressor controls can wear out over time, especially if your system isn’t properly maintained. Your technician will test the controls, tighten electrical connections, inspect the terminals and wires for corrosion and apply a nonconductive coating to prevent future corrosion and rust.
Problem: Dust Buildup
Dust inside your system can lead to the premature failure of essential components like the fan, motor and coils. A technician will remove dust from these components, but it’s up to you to keep them clean with regular air filter changes. Check your filter monthly and replace it when you can’t see the filter material behind the dust.
