Don't Waste Energy — The Best Temperatures When You Are Not Home
Energy prices keep going up. That’s just a fact of life. And when you find yourself in the throes of a season—whether it be summer or winter—you are likely to find your energy bills are even higher as you attempt to keep your home at the best temperatures for everyone’s comfort. But how much time do you really spend at home? And do you really need to keep your home at the same temperature when you are at work?
You could reset your thermostat every time you enter and leave your home, but a programmable thermostat can save you money by allowing you to set the thermostat to the best temperatures for the day and time. You just set it and forget it. For example, on a chilly Monday morning during the winter, your thermostat might be set to reach 68 degrees by 7 a.m. The furnace kicks on shortly before 7 o’clock to make sure the house is warm when you get up. By 9:30 a.m. everyone has left the house for school and work, so the temperature goes down to 55 degrees. Your family begins arriving home around 4 p.m. so the furnace once again begins to warm the house shortly before the designated time.
There are three different types of programmable thermostats.
- The seven day model allows you to enter different settings for every day. This is especially helpful if your schedule fluctuates from day to day.
- The 5+2 model allows you to enter one group of settings for weekdays and another for weekends.
- The 5-1-1 model allows you to enter one group of settings for weekdays, one for Saturdays and one for Sundays.
Whichever model you choose, you are sure to save money by not heating or cooling your house when no one is there to enjoy it. Better still, when you pick the right programmable thermostat you can set it to the best temperatures once and you won’t have to touch it again.
