Is It Time for More Insulation in Your Home?
Insulation is one of the hidden warriors in your home that fights to maintain comfortable internal temperatures throughout the year. Without an adequate amount of insulation, the warm or cool air generated by your HVAC systems can be easily lost. In order to stay comfortable and improve your energy efficiency, you may need to add more insulation to places like your attic. The following might be signs that your home doesn’t have enough insulation:
- Wall or ceilings that are hot or cold to the touch
- Drafty rooms
- Unreasonably high heating or cooling bills
- Formation of ice dams in the winter
- Insulation levels are at or below the joists in your attic
If you’ve determined that your home does require more insulation, it’s important to find the right NATE (North American Technician Excellence) certified HVAC technician for the job. While some homeowners attempt to complete the project themselves, some factors can require the expertise of a professional, including a leaky roof, damp insulation, moldy or rotted rafters, little to no ventilation and old wiring.
The contractor you hire for the jobs will likely use safety glasses, gloves, a hard hat, a utility knife, and the right kind of insulation. In Bexar County and the rest of South Texas, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends an insulation R-value of 30 to 60 for uninsulated attics, 25 – 38 for attics with an existing 3 to 4 inches of insulation and 13 – 19 for uninsulated crawlspaces and basements. Fiberglass, rock wool, cellulose, vermiculite and perlite all have different R-values according to their depth. Once the right material is chosen, your contractor will lay the rolls out and ensure that all fixtures and vents are physically separated from the insulation with wire mesh to prevent fire.
While South Texas homes require less insulation than homes in many other parts of the country, it’s still a very important part of staying comfortable and energy efficient.
