‘Tis the season to be giving, and you can’t give yourself any gift better than lower energy bills. Even though our San Antonio winters tend to be mild, there are still myriad ways to save money on utility bills. Here are a few of them to try out.
Keep Your Heating System in Good Working Order
Whether you have a furnace or a heat pump, it will pay off to have it checked out every fall. Catching potential malfunctions before they cause damage will save money in the long run, while helping your system run more efficiently. Schedule a professional checkup, and have your consultant test the thermostat and controls, the electrical connections, the blower motor and the vents and ductwork. For a furnace, the consultant should check out the ignition system, the heat exchanger and the burners.
Also, change the air filter in the furnace regularly. A clean filter will promote better air flow so that your system works more efficiently.
Air Seal Your Home
One of the ways your home’s efficiency is most severely compromised is through the migration of unconditioned air into your home and conditioned air out of the home. Air can leak through small cracks around windows and doors, through the holes for pipes, cables and wires, through electrical switches and plugs, around attic hatch doors and around baseboards.
Light an incense stick and wave it in front of these areas on a windy day. If the smoke wavers, you likely have a leak that should be fixed. Use insulation or caulk to plug up cracks and gaps. Install foam gaskets under electric switch plates.
Also, repair holes and disconnected segments in your home’s ductwork so that conditioned air is not lost in unconditioned spaces.
Program the Thermostat for Savings
If you don’t have a programmable thermostat, consider installing one. With a programmable thermostat you can easily set the heating down a few degrees for those periods when the family is sleeping or away.
