Did you know that the air inside your home is likely far more polluted than the air outside? The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency states that indoor air quality is far worse than the quality of the air outdoors. In fact, the EPA says that the quality of the air inside of our homes is one of the top five health risks that we face today.
Thankfully, using the right air filters in your heating/cooling system can contribute to improved indoor air quality. While you may think it’s no big deal, you cannot see most of the things that are floating around in the air. Dust mites, pollen, pet dander and even some molds can put the health of your family at risk.
For years, many homeowners used the paper filters that you buy at the local home supply or big box store. Even then, the filter may have been changed only when the existing one was excessively dirty — or when they thought about it. Today, there are various filters that are far more capable of improving indoor air quality.
Here are some tips for choosing a filter for your heating/cooling system:
- Check the MERV rating. The higher the rating, the fewer contaminants can pass through the filter. A rating of 1-4 is poor, as these filters do not stop small particles from passing through. Look for a rating of at least 5-8. If you want the best possible dust control, a MERV rating of 9-12 is preferable.
- HEPA, pleated, electronic and activated carbon air filters are a few of the choices that you want to consider. Fiberglass air filters are economical, but not as effective as other types. If you aren’t sure which type is best for your situation, check with a professional.
Keep these tips in mind when choosing the right air filter for your home. Improved indoor air quality means cleaner, healthier air and fewer respiratory illnesses.
